English: topographic name from Anglo-Norman French Middle English castel ‘castle fortified building or set of buildings’ especially the residence of a feudal lord (from Late Latin castellum a diminutive of castrum ‘fort Roman walled city’). The name would also have denoted a servant who lived and worked at such a place or someone who had an obligation to provide services or rent to a castle.
