Slovenian: nickname for someone from the western and southwestern edges of the Slovenian-speaking regions in particular from the surroundings of Monfalcone (Slovenian name Tržič) a city in the Italian province of Friuli Venezia Giulia and from Istria. It is of uncertain origin most probably derived from Slovenian dialect bez ‘elder’ or possibly from bize a term denoting a kind of pants. See also below. Slovenian and Croatian: from a variant of the nickname Bezjak for someone from the region between the Sava and Drava rivers in Croatia where the Kajkavian language (a language very close to Slovenian) is spoken. The nickname Bezjak which is etymologically the same as the nickname Bizjak in 1 above also denoted a silly or rude person.
