English (Essex and London): from the Middle English personal names Aillet Aliett or Eliet the main source of which is the common Old English female name Æthelgȳth composed of the elements æthel ‘noble’ + gȳth ‘war’ but the much rarer Old English male name Æthelgēat containing the tribal name Gēat may also have contributed.
