Argyle Family History

Argyle Name Meaning

English: from Middle English erguil(e) a variant of Middle English orguil(e) Old French orguel ‘pride arrogance’ hence the variation of Argill and Argile with Orgill . Alternatively perhaps a variant of Arkell with voicing of k to g. No evidence has been found to support the idea that this is a habitational name from Argyll the county of southwestern Scotland though folk etymology to this effect may be partly responsible for the modern spelling of the surname.
