English (Yorkshire): nickname for a truthful person, or perhaps
rather for someone who was in the habit of insisting repeatedly on the
truth of the stories he told, from Middle English verite
‘truth(fulness)’ (Old French verité). The surname may
sometimes have been acquired by someone who had acted the part of the
personified quality of Truth in a mystery play or pageant.
