There are a number of early English
examples of the name with articles rather than prepositions, which
Reaney explains as being from a southern form of Middle English
faus ‘false’, ‘untrustworthy’ (late Old English fals,
from Latin falsus, reinforced by Old French fals,
faus from the same source).
