- English (common especially in the Midlands): nickname for a trustworthy man, from Middle English trewe, trow ‘faithful’ + man ‘man’. This was apparently also used as a personal name during the Middle Ages, and some instances of the surname may derive from this use.
- Americanized form of any of the various Jewish surnames derived from German treu ‘true’, ‘faithful’, for example Treu(mann), Treiman; Getreuer; Getroir, Getrouer (from Yiddish getray, influenced by German treu); Treuherz (‘true heart’).
