English (common especially in the Midlands): nickname for a
trustworthy man, from Middle English trewe, trow
‘faithful’ + man ‘man’. This was apparently also used as a
personal name during the Middle Ages, and some instances of the
surname may derive from this use.
Americanized form of any of the
various Jewish surnames derived from German treu ‘true’,
‘faithful’, for example Treu(mann), Treiman;
Getreuer; Getroir, Getrouer (from Yiddish
getray, influenced by German treu); Treuherz
(‘true heart’).
