Irish: of uncertain origin. It is possibly a reduced form of the
Scottish surname Garscadden, a habitational name from a place
east of Glasgow; alternatively it may be from Gaelic scadán
‘herring’, a word probably borrowed from Norse. There have been
Scaddans in Tipperary since the 12th century.
