English: topographic name for someone who lived on or by a ridge,
Middle English rigge, or a habitational name from any of the
places named with this word, as for example Ridge in
Hertfordshire. The surname is also fairly common in Ireland, in County
Galway, having been taken to Connacht in the early 17th century. The
name is sometimes Gaelicized as Mac Iomaire; iomaire is
modern Irish for ‘ridge’.
