French (Rémy) and Swiss German: from a medieval personal
name which represents a falling together of two distinct Latin names:
Remigius (a derivative of remex, genitive
remigis, ‘rower, oarsman’), and Remedius (from
remedium ‘cure’, ‘remedy’). The former name was borne by a
6th-century bishop of Rheims; the latter was borne by various minor
saints of the 8th to 10th centuries.
