English (Kentish): occupational name for a maker or seller of
pilches, from an agent derivative of Pilch. In early 17th-century English, pilcher was a popular term of abuse, being
confused or punningly associated with the unrelated verb pilch
‘to steal’ and with the unrelated noun pilchard, a kind of
fish.
