Canadian spelling of French Pichet, from Old French
pichet ‘little pot’, a measure for liquids or grain, hence a
metonymic occupational name for a potter or a seller of foodstuffs, or
nickname for a short person. The spelling reflects the Canadian
practice of pronouncing the final -t, which is not done in
metropolitan France.
