  2. Chinese : from a character in the personal name of Fan Zhongpi, son of Wen Wang, the virtuous duke whose magnanimous rule led to the establishment of the Zhou dynasty in 1122 bc. Generations later, a branch of his descendants adopted the second character of his given name, Pi, as their surname.
