Japanese: ‘small field’; variously written, mostly found in western
Japan. In its Romanized form, the surname is often confused with
Ono, which means ‘large field’ and is also a common place
name and surname throughout Japan and in the Ryukyu
Islands. Some bearers of the surname are descended from the
Minamoto. Ono is listed in the Shinsen shojiroku.
