Japanese: ‘offing’; a very old surname which is a component of the
name of the island of Okinawa, as well as of the Oki Islands north of
Shimane prefecture (though the latter is written phonetically with
different characters). The surname is listed in the Shinsen
shojiroku, but written with different characters used phonetically.
