Dutch and North German: from a Germanic personal name formed
with an element cognate with Middle Low German not
‘distress’, ‘power’.
Swedish: probably an ornamental or
habitational name formed with Nol-, from Nord- ‘north’,
plus the adjectival suffix -én, from Latin -en(i)us.
However, it may also be a variant of Nolin, which in at least
one case is derived from a place called Skällsäter, by
Latinization of Skäll-, erroneously thought to be derived
from Swedish skälla ‘little bell’, Latin nola. The
place name is in fact derived either from Swedish dialect
skäll ‘barren’, ‘infertile’, or from Swedish sköld
‘shield’.
