- It is most probably an altered from of German Nimtz (see Nemetz).
- It has also been suggested that it may be an Anglicized form of French Nîmes, and so a habitational name from the city of this name. However, the evidence in support of this hypothesis seems to depend largely on the similarity in spelling.
