German: occupational name for a man in the service of a member of
the nobility, originally one who looked after the horses, Middle High
German marschalc (from mar(c) ‘noble horse’ +
schalk ‘servant’). In time the term came to be used for a
military rank or a certain court official. Compare Marshall.
