English (of Norman origin): nickname for an unfortunate person,
from Old French malheure ‘unhappy’, ‘unlucky’. The etymology
from maloret ‘ill-omened’ (Latin male ‘badly’ +
auguratus) is less likely for the surname that has actually
survived, although it does lie behind other medieval Norman surnames
of this form, now defunct.
