English: topographic name for someone who lived by an extensive
(Middle English long ‘long’) piece of open country or
pastureland (feld(e)). There is a place so named in Kent (from
Old English lang + feld), recorded from the 10th
century, and there are several in West Yorkshire, where the surname is
common. Two places now called Longville in Shropshire also have this
origin.
