bothem ‘valley bottom’. Given the surname’s present-day
distribution, Longbottom in Luddenden Foot, West Yorkshire, may be the
origin, but there are also two places called Long Bottom in Hampshire,
two in Wiltshire, and Longbottom Farm in Somerset and in Wiltshire.
