German (Kübler): occupational name for a cooper, from an
agent derivative of Middle High German kübel ‘tub’, ‘vat’,
‘barrel’. Alternatively, but less likely, it may be a derivative of
the Franconian dialect word Kobel ‘hut’, ‘dovecote’, here
denoting a farm laborer’s cottage, and hence a name for a cotter (a
peasant occupying a tied cottage belonging to a farm).
