Irish: from a mistranslation of Gaelic Ó Dubháin
‘descendant of Dubhán’, a byname from a diminutive of
dubh ‘black’ (see Devine). This was confused with the
Gaelic word dubhán ‘kidney’, which is in fact a derivative
of dubh ‘black’.
