Polish, Ukrainian, Sorbian, Czech, Slovak, and Hungarian
(Kabát): from Polish and Sorbian kabat, Czech,
Slovak, and Hungarian kabát ‘coat’, ‘jerkin’, also ‘military
uniform’, hence a metonymic occupational name for a maker of short
coats or a nickname for a soldier. In Ukrainian the Polish loanword
kabat also means ‘skirt’, and may have been applied as a
nickname for an effeminate man.
