From the Latin personal name Julius, an aristocratic Roman family name made famous by Julius Caesar, the first Roman emperor. The personal name was borne in the Middle Ages by various minor Christian saints, and was nearly as popular as its derivative Julian. As a modern surname it is found in various European languages, generally as a humanistic name or a re-Latinization of a vernacular form such as French Jules.
