From the Latin personal name Julius, an aristocratic Roman
family name made famous by Julius Caesar, the first Roman emperor.
The personal name was borne in the Middle Ages by various minor
Christian saints, and was nearly as popular as its derivative
Julian. As a modern surname it is found in various European
languages, generally as a humanistic name or a re-Latinization of a
vernacular form such as French Jules.
