German (Hübsch) and Jewish (Ashkenazic): nickname from
Middle High German hübesch ‘courtly’, ‘polite’, ‘refined’,
‘agreeable’, German hübsch. The present-day sense of
hübsch, ‘pretty’, ‘handsome’, ‘nice’, is a comparatively
recent development and is unlikely to have affected the German
surname, although it is the sense of the Jewish name, which is mainly
ornamental.
