French (Honoré): from a medieval personal name (Latin
Honoratus ‘honored’). The name was borne by a 5th-century
bishop of Arles and a 6th-century bishop of Amiens, both of whom
became popular minor saints and contributed to the frequency of the
name in the Middle Ages. The surname was taken to Denmark by French
Huguenots who migrated there in the 17th century.
