Hartshorn in Northumberland, named from Old English heorot
‘hart’, ‘stag’ + horn ‘horn’, i.e. hill with some fancied
resemblance to a hart’s horn. Reaney suggests a further possibility:
that it could come from the Middle English plant name
harteshorn ‘hartshorn’, denoting either of two plants with
leaves branched like a stag’s antlers: Senebiera coronopus and
Plantago coronopus.
