English and Scottish: said to be a habitational name from Granson
on Lake Neuchâtel. The first known bearer of the surname is
Rigaldus de Grancione (fl. 1040). The name was taken to Britain
by Otes de Grandison (died 1328) and his brother. They were among a
group of Savoyards who settled in England when Henry III married a
granddaughter of the Count of Savoy.
