English: from Anglo-Norman French gardinier
‘gardener’. In medieval times this normally denoted a cultivator of
edible produce in an orchard or kitchen garden, rather than one who
tended ornamental lawns and flower beds.
Americanized
form of French Desjardins or German Gärtner (see
Gartner).
