Italian: from the female personal name Ellena, or possibly
an ethnic name from the Greek word Hellenas ‘Greek’. From late classical times onward this word meant only ‘pagan’,
until it was revived in the 19th century as an ethnic term used by
Greeks to refer to themselves.
