chez Name Meaning and History
French: from chez ‘of the house of’. When a man of good
lineage or repute became an outlaw this was added before his name to
indicate both his status and the family of which he used to be
considered a part. In some cases the chez was adopted as a
surname in its own right and the family name was dropped.
