Italian: from cànepa ‘hemp’, from Latin cannabis,
a plant cultivated for its strong fibrous stems, which were used to
make rope and canvas, hence a metonymic occupational name for a grower
or seller of hemp or of articles made from it, a topographic name for
someone who lived in an area where the plant was grown, or a
habitational name from Canèpa in Genoa province.
