English: probably a variant spelling of Bircham, a
habitational name from a group of villages in Norfolk (Great Bircham,
Bircham Newton, and Bircham Tofts), named with Old English
brec ‘newly cultivated ground’ + ham
‘homestead’. There is also a Bircham in Devon, named with Old English
birce ‘birch’ + ham or hamm ‘enclosure hemmed
in by water’, which could have given rise to the surname.
