The bronte Surname

bronte Name Meaning and History

Altered form of Irish Prunty. The change in spelling was probably an early 19th-century development, due to romantic admiration for the English admiral Lord Nelson, on whom the title Duke of Bronte was conferred in 1799 by Ferdinand, King of the Two Sicilies. Bronte is the name of a place in Sicily, literally meaning ‘thunder’.
