French: from Old French bourdon, a word with several
meanings, from any or each of which the surname could have arisen:
‘pilgrim’s staff’, as a nickname for a pilgrim; ‘bumblebee’, as a
nickname for someone thought to resemble the insect in some way; and
‘bagpipes’, as a metonymic occupational name for a piper or
pipe-maker.
