The berrigan Surname

berrigan Name Meaning and History

Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Beirgin or Ó Meirgin, a variant of Ó hAimheirgin ‘descendant of Aimheirgin’, a personal name in early Irish mythology and historical tales, perhaps composed of the elements amhra ‘wonderful’ + gin ‘birth’. (The Gaelic pronunciation would have an extra vowel between the r and the g, as shown in the Anglicized spelling.)
