English: from Old French balon ‘bundle’, ‘roll’, ‘pack’,
hence a nickname for a small, rotund man or possibly a metonymic
occupational name for a carrier of goods and merchandise.
French (Bâlon): generally regarded as a habitational
name from Baalons in the Ardennes, it may however simply be from
balon ‘ball’, ‘roll’ (see 1) or a derivative of Bal.
