with A-. It is generally a pet form of a pet form, i.e. from a
pet form of Adam such as Ade or Aitkin + the
Middle English hypocoristic suffix -cok (see Cocke),
which was very commonly added to personal names in Middle English;
compare, for example, Adcock, Alcock, Hancock,
Wilcock.
