- Jewish (Ashkenazic): from the Yiddish personal name Meyer (from Hebrew Meir ‘enlightener’, a derivative of Hebrew or ‘light’).
- Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Meidhir, from meidhir ‘mirth’.
- Danish: variant spelling of Meier 3.
