This photo of my great-grandfather, Antone Jacobs', brass band was taken in Buhl, Lorraine, France. He was the bandleader holding the baton. He arrived in New York on Ellis Island in 1895 and settled in Surprise Valley, California. He and his family had to learn the language and culture of the cowboys and pioneers. He eventually owned a General Store and became a successful merchant in a growing "wild west" town.
