Two hefty tomes rolled off the presses recently that will provide genealogists with an abundance of information. They are: Cyndi's List and British Roots of Maryland Families. Cyndi's List -- the comprehensive listing of 40,000 genealogy sites on the Internet -- is now available in a book version. Of course, the website now has more than 55,000 links and grows daily. The Web changes rapidly, making anything written about it obsolete by the time the story appears in print. According to the publishers, the printed version of Howells' popular website (http://www.cyndislist.com/) was done primarily for libraries and Family History Centers and as a convenience for those who pay for their Internet connectivity by the minute. Having a print version enables researchers to prepare in advance for their precious online research time. This 880-page, 8 1/2'' x 11'' paperback is a hefty tome and is not the type of book you might normally read in bed. However, it is handy for just browsing and for finding new links to material you might not know about or even realize was available on the Web. The book is identical to the website, with only a few exceptions. -- The book does not include the Personal Home Pages category that is at the site. -- On each U.S. state page, the USGenWeb section has been trimmed down to include only state-level addresses. Individual county resources can be found by visiting those sites, or from Cyndi's List on the Web. -- Miscellaneous category pages or sections were removed from the book in order to conserve space. Cyndi's List, by Cyndi Howells is available ($53.45 postpaid) from: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1001 N. Calvert St., Baltimore, MD 21202-3897. Phone: (800) 296-6687; http://www.GenealogyBookShop.com/ British Roots of Maryland Families, by Robert Barnes, contains 684 pages, and is a new and comprehensive collection of genealogies. Burns has served as president of the Maryland Genealogical Society and Baltimore County Genealogical Society. He has more than 35 years experience tracing Maryland families. Additionally, he is the verifying genealogist for a number of lineage societies, including the National Society of Colonial Dames of America in the states of Maryland and Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Sons of the Revolution, and the Maryland and Pennsylvania State Societies of the Cincinnati. This new book is touted as the most authoritative account of the British origins of Maryland families ever published. The work contains information on nearly 500 individuals and families. Among their ranks were those of royal or noble descent, those with professional, clerical, or mercantile background, plus indentured servants, convicts, and some of undetermined status. In general, families are traced back two or more generations in England and brought forward two or more generations in Maryland. The 140-page index contains the names of 20,000 individuals. British Roots of Maryland Families is available ($53.45 postpaid) from Genealogical Publishing at the above address.
