NEW CDS MAY UNCOVER OLD FAMILY LINES
|
Some new CDs are going to be loved by many whose ancestors came from or through Pennsylvania or Virginia between the late 17th century and the early 1800s. If you are among the more than 100 million Americans who have such ancestors, you are quite likely to discover a reference to a forebear on these brand-new CDs. Published by Palladium Interactive (producer of Ultimate Family Tree software), the initial CD-ROM releases in its Ultimate Family Data Library cover a variety of records from these two states. They include documentary abstracts of church, wills, and land records. You may find, as I did, your ancestor's name (be sure to try the Soundex search option to find those oddball spellings of family names) listed as a witness to a will or land record. These so-called "buried'' citations, often overlooked, excite family historians because they often provide new clues to familial relationships. Uncovering the names of your ancestors' neighbors furnishes you additional surnames with which to work. After all, in the old days a man seldom went far to find a bride. Knowing who the neighbors were may furnish new clues to the maiden names of the women your ancestors married and help you untangle some of those entwined branches of your family tree. You can use the Master Index CD-ROM, which can be purchased separately for $5.99 (but is free with the purchase of any CD in this new series), or if you have Web access you can check this master index free at: http://www.familyinfo.com. The Ultimate Family Data Library series currently contains more than 55 million names from more than 19 sources. The information includes: -- Every person listed in a record -- Relationships to the key person (wife or son, for example) -- Date and place of the event -- Volume and page number of the original record, when they are available Brand new are the passenger lists for the Port of New Orleans (1840-1849) and Other Ports (Baltimore, Boston and Philadelphia, 1820-1830). These records have never before been collected and formatted on CDs. The Pennsylvania CD Series includes abstracts from: -- Colonial Pennsylvania Naturalization Records -- Adams County Church Records, 1745-1825 (baptisms, births, marriages and deaths from the registers of 16 churches) -- Berks County Church Records, 1752-1825, from more than a dozen churches -- Berks County Wills, 1752-1825 -- Bucks County Wills, 1682-1800 -- Cumberland County Wills, 1750-1825 -- Lancaster County Wills, 1729-1825 -- Lancaster County Land Records, 1729-1825 (abstracts of about 10,000 deeds) -- Lancaster County Church Records, 1729-1825 (from registers of 16 churches) The Virginia CD Series includes abstracts from the following sources: -- Augusta County Wills, 1743-1800 -- Augusta County Deeds, 1743-1800 -- Augusta County Marriages, 1748-1800 -- Isle of Wight County Wills, 1647-1800 -- Norfolk County Wills, 1752-1825 -- Spotsylvania County Land Records, 1722-1751 Prices of the individual CDs vary from $29.99 to $39.99 each, plus shipping and any applicable sales tax.
