In quest of British Ancestors
|
The years have a way of flying by when you're having fun, and pursing ancestors is fun. When the latest issue of the award-winning ISBGFH Newsletter arrived recently, it sported a blue-and-gold embossed seal announcing "Our 20th Year." Impossible, I thought. But I was wrong. ISBGFH is the acronym for International Society for British Genealogy and Family History (now you know why it goes by ISBGFH) which was founded in February of 1979 at a meeting in Fairview Park, Ohio. It was launched by a handful of genealogists with specific British interests with the help of Donald J. Steel, a noted English genealogist. ISBGFH publishes an interesting and helpful newsletter under the guidance of Angela Peterson, the current editor. Articles are topnotch and always timely. Long before the Internet opened virtual doors for genealogical research, the ISBGFH Newsletter provided genealogical news, queries, and tips on tracking those British ancestors that perch upon the branches of so many family trees. The latest issue (January-March 1999) features: An excellent article by Anne Wuehler entitled, "The Basics of Scottish Research.""Did You Know?" is a column by Paul F. Smart. In it I learned that the new official name for the Scottish Records Office is the National Archives of Scotland or NAS (this office previously was known as the Old Register House); that AncestralFile (TM) has been updated and sent to all Family History Centers; that the Merseyside Record Office has moved in with the Liverpool City Record Office at William Brown Street, Liverpool L3 8EW, England; its e-mail address is: ro@lvpublib.demon.co.uk ; and that the Derbyshire Record Office has published a revised list of parish (with details on cost and how to obtain)."Country News" is a regular column with information about anything genealogical going on in Australia, Canada, England, Scotland, South Africa, United States and elsewhere. Here I discovered the published list of e-mail addresses of member societies of the FFHS (Federation of Family History Societies) is on the Web at: http://www.Hawgood.co.uk/ffhs.htm and that there is an index (more than 15,000 names) of brassworkers. Contact Ms. Pat Santana, 29 Gilda Court, Watford Way, Mill Hill, London NW7 2QN (include SAE or IRC) for information about this. Under "Just Browsing" is news about:GENFair http://www.genfair.com which opens up a wider, international market for the goods and services of British Family History Societies and other suppliers of genealogical goodies. There's an online service http://www.earl.org.uk/familia/ to help you locate materials in British and Irish Public LibrariesIf your British ancestors served in India check out this URL: http://www.ozemail.com.au/~clday Confused about the 17th century "Hearth Tax" of England and Wales? You won't be after you read the informative questions-and-answers article on the subject where I learned there's even a website on the subject at: http://www.tall.ox.ac.uk/Hampden/Hearth_Tax_Web_site.htm The regular "Book Notes" column provides up-to-date information about books, CDs, and various publications. Many of these mentioned therein are published in the UK (United Kingdom), but are of interest to anyone tracing British lines. The Newsletter is published four times a year and annual membership ($15 for North Americans) in ISBGFH includes a subscription to it. ISBGFH is on the web: http://www.homestart.com/isbgfh and can be contacted by snail mail at P.O. Box 3115, Salt Lake City, UT 84110-3115, or by telephone: 801/272-2178.
