Shaking Your Family Tree

February 18, 1999

Shaking Your Family Tree, by Myra Vanderpool Gormley, C.G.

GENEALOGICAL BOOKS AND CDS

by Myra Vanderpool Gormley, C.G.

The second edition of Cherokee Proud by Tony Mack McClure, Ph.D., is billed as "a guide for tracing and honoring your Cherokee ancestors.'' Indeed, it is more than just a "how-to'' book. There are chapters about "Honoring Your Native Ancestors'',"When Memories Are Dishonored'', "Andrew Jackson: Hero or Hatchet Man?'', "Learning the Mother Tongue'', "Cherokee Stomp Dance and Music'', and "Contemporary Traditional Dress.''

The chapter on "Legends of Black Dutch'' only repeats many of the stories about the origin of this term, with which some genealogical scholars disagree. However, the subject is of interest since many genealogists have oral histories about ancestors who were called "Black Dutch.''

Appendix 1 provides a listing (and film numbers) of the many microfilms available (for sale or by rental) from Heritage Quest (http://www.heritagequest.com) (formerly American Genealogical Lending Library) of particular interest to Cherokee researchers.

Cherokee Proud contains 308 pages and is richly illustrated. It is published by Chunanee Books, P.O. Box 127, Somerville, TN 38068, and retails for $22.95.

Vital Information from the Guion Miller Roll (Eastern Cherokee Court of Claims, 1906-9) is now available on CD and in hardback. It indexes 48,626 applicants by surname and in the case of married women, also by their maiden name. Children under the care of a guardian are listed by their own name rather than that of their guardian. All residences are listed by town, modern county and modern state. Additionally, the birth year and birthplace of every applicant (except those who did not provide it) are included.

The CD ($30) and hardback edition ($159.64) are available from Indian Scout Publications, 16212 Bothell Everett Highway, Suite F-281, Mill Creek, WA 98012-1219; (888) 832-0791 (toll-free) or via the Web at http://www.ndnscout.com/.

Reformed Dutch Church of New Amsterdam and New York City -- With the permission of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, Robert Griffin of Bergen Historic Books has reprinted Volumes 2 and 3 of the society's "Collections.''

These contain baptismal records of the Reformed Dutch Church of New Amsterdam and New York City. Both volumes may now be ordered from: Bergen Historic Books, P.O. Box 244, Englewood, NJ 07631. Volume 2 covers 1639 to 1730, while Volume 3 includes records from 1731 to 1800. Each volume costs $75 or order both for $140, with $5 postage/handling for one volume, $8 for both volumes. For delivery in New Jersey, add 6 percent sales tax. These volumes were originally published by NYGBS in 1901-1902 and reprinted by Gregg Press in 1968, but they have been out of print for several years. Additional information on NYGBS can be found at http://www.nygbs.org.

Beginning Your Family History in Great Britain by George Pelling. This seventh edition has been revised and updated by Pauline Litton, a vice president of the Federation of Family History Societies.

An excellent basic guide, it focuses on the essentials of research in Britain's records. Additionally, it provides up-to-date information and tips about sources used by genealogists researching British ancestry -- census records, parish registers, civil registration records, land records, wills, armed services, newspapers, and tax records. It also supplies the names, addresses, and holdings of all key record repositories in Britain.

This 96-page book is available from Genealogical Publishing Co., 1001 N. Calvert St., Baltimore, MD 21202-3897 ($11.45 postpaid); http://www.genealogybookshop.com/.
